Abstract: Seattle's Early Music Guild

by Marie Coldwell (Read about this author in the Member directory.)

This presentation traces the growth of early music in Seattle from the early 1950s to the present. Pioneers like Eva Heinitz at the University of Washington and Peter Hallock at St. Mark's Cathedral started the revival. A group of volunteers founded the Early Music Guild of Seattle in 1977 to bring outstanding touring ensembles from Europe and to support the work of Seattle-based early music artists. An influx of extremely talented early music specialists in the late 1980s and 1990s led to the founding next of the Seattle Baroque Orchestra and, then, the Tudor Choir. Why has there been such a "boom" in early music in Seattle, and throughout the world? What factors have contributed to the popularity of Gregorian chant and period instruments? The Seattle revival is placed in a national and international context.
