Abstract: Cascade Passes: Crossing to Statehood

by Judith M. Bentley (Read about this author in the Member directory.)

This illustrated presentation based on Ms. Bentley's hiking research examines the search for a way over the Cascades: for cattle, horses, canoes, people on foot, wagons, soldiers and warriors, ore, railroads, cars, trucks and small planes. Indian trails such as the Klickitat Trail over Cispus Pass, George McClellan’s recommendation of Yakima Pass, the Naches Wagon road through Naches Pass, Alexander Ross and Henry Pierce’s explorations of Cascade Pass, the Milwaukee Road and Great Northern’s building through Stampede and Stevens passes are also investigated. This presentation will explores how important the passes really were, which passes truly worked, and what it took to make them “work”.
