Abstract: Seattle's Underground Press since the 1960sby Paul Dorpat (Read about this author in the Member directory.)
This presentation is a reflection on the "happenings" of the late 1960s and early 1970s) in the Seattle area as shown by and stimulated through the independent Prominent underground publications were characterized by opposing the war in Vietnam and the politics in Washington, DC. But the underground press also chronicled the experimenting in a variety of life styles, which flowered at the time. This will be a personal witness, for I am old enough to have been there.
We start with a thumbnail history of Helix, the newspaper I started and edited in the late 1960s here in Seattle. I would show slides of representative pages, revealing both the concerns and enthusiasms of the paper and those it served. They and we were often referred to as members of the "counter culture" although we were not issued cards. I would then note and show examples from some other publications that followed the Helix and were in a variety of ways similar to it and each other. Included in this group were The Northwest Passage, The Spokane Natural, The Willamette Bridge (in Portland), The Georgia Straight (in Vancouver B.C.), The Seattle Flag, The Sabot, The Rocket, The Weekly and most recently The Stranger.
