Abstract: Wars Along the River: the Nisqually View of Treaty Rights

by Georgiana Kautz (Read about this author in the Member directory.)

I work for the Nisqually Tribe, working on policy issues that can impact our Native reservation. I will talk about the Nisqually Tribe and Treaties that were signed. During the Boldt Decision times, my husband and I were fishing on the Nisqually River to bring awareness of our Treaty Rights to 50% of the Salmon and the Shellfish, the Hunting Rights and the Water Rights. I want to talk about living on the reservation then and what has transpired since the Boldt Decision and our future decision and preservation our culture and recovery of all species. I will cover why this is important to the Tribes and also important to people in the State of Washington. This is a quality of life issue that should be a concern of everyone in each of the region’s watersheds. Boldt's decision re-affirmed our rights they we had by signing the Treaty. Our forefathers in 1855 knew what was important for Tribes, fishing, hunting, water, shellfish and gathering rights.
