Abstract: Dance in Seattle: Home Grown or Imported?by Sandra Kurtz (Read about this author in the Member directory.)
In the 1970's the National Endowment for the Arts inaugurated the Dance Touring Program, which was designed to encourage national touring for companies and individual artists based in major dance centers who otherwise would not be able to travel. At the time, this was seen as a boon to the touring companies, but as it happened, this activity had a significant impact on the development of dance in the cities they visited. My presentation focuses on Seattle, and the changes that occurred in the dance community here as a result of these touring organizations. I will discuss the development of dance here from the 60's to the present, covering institutions and individuals, and linking it to other events in the cultural history of the area. Many of the institutions we see today have been shaped by the changes that the DTP produced, and some are solely a product of those times and events.
